A Tribute To Abbey Lincoln – Singer, Songwriter & Champion Of The Civil Rights Movement

Abbey Lincoln was an extraordinary jazz singer whose musical knowledge and method equipped her to work with some of the greatest jazz musicians of her time. Born Anna Marie Wooldridge in Chicago on the 6 August 1930 she started her music career in 1956. Her debut album was entitled ‘Abbey Lincoln’s Affair – A Story of a Girl in Love’.

She quickly established herself as country’s one of the most impressive jazz singers with her emotionally complex and passionate delivery. Her last album was released in 2007 – her career spanned six decades.

In 1957, Abbey Lincoln’s life changed when she began to dedicate it to righting the wrongs that American society inflicted on black people. She established herself as a pioneering advocate of civil rights and recorded the album titled ‘We Insist!- Freedom Now Suite’ that officially connected her to the political battle against racism.

Abbey Lincoln, singer, songwriter and political activist died in New York on 14 August 2010 aged 80.

If you go to the Telegraph for a review of the movie Inception you’ll find two. One is by Tim Robey (572 words) and the other by Jenny McCartney of Seven Magazine (618 words). I saw it yesterday and can sum it up with one word – CRAP!

Actually that is what both the long reviews say but let’s face what editor would pay a jouno for writing one word?

Marijuana plants are innocent OK!

No one has ever died of marijuana use but millions die from smoking tobacco and alcohol abuse and yet marijuana is illegal. Why?

I found this brilliant animated video that illustrates how society could be so different if we stopped this irrational prejudice against this very useful plant. The weed is innocent!

The animation is called The Flower and it contrasts a utopian society that freely farms and consumes a pleasure giving flower with a society where the same flower is illegal and its consumption is prohibited.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie share a love of children and a commitment to human rights. They have shared their lives since 2005 and despite rumours of a split remain together to this day. He had his first child with Angelia Jolie in May, 2006. Her name is Shiloh Jolie-Pitt. March 2007 – he and girlfriend Angelina Jolie adopted a 3-year-old boy named Pax Thien from Vietnam (born November 29th 2003). Pitt is also the adoptive father of Jolie’s children Maddox and Zahara. Moved to New Orleans with Jolie and their four children in 2007.

On July 12th 2008, his long-time girlfriend Angelina Jolie gave birth to twins – a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline. Both Brad and Angelina are thoroughly nice people who have success in the movie business and use the wealth derived from that success to improve the life of individuals and communities.

Pitt donated 5 million dollars of his own money to rebuild homes in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. He is a Patron of the Mineseeker Foundation and the Sole of Africa, a campaign dedicated to detecting and removing land mines in Africa. The Foundation’s patrons include Nelson Mandela, Sir Richard Branson, Queen Noor, Graca Machel and John Paul de Joria. This is, of course, only the tip of the iceberg.

With a track record like that Pitt deserves a happy life and as a fan of both he and Angelina Jolie I hope that they both remain together spreading the love.

I was visiting Bristol, a British city in the west of England, last weekend and bumped into the Bristol version of The Naked Bike Ride UK.

The Naked Bike Ride UK is a “peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture” says their web site. “A celebration of the bicycle and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body. A symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic”, it adds.

It is the world’s biggest naked protest with over 50 cities and thousands of riders participating throughout the world. It is claimed that 3,000 joined the event in the UK in 2009.

The unique protests started on June 11 in 2010.

I love this dance it is sexy and fun. It’s a happy dance and the music is jolly. I’ve danced forró (very badly), at clubs in Brazil and London. Forró, is pronounced “for-ho” in Portuguese.

The place dance forró, in London is Guanabara, every Sunday.

Me attemping to dance forro with a georgeous Brazilian, Marcelene who lives in Ipatinga. No prizes for spotting the best legs.
